Holiday Help: Last Minute Halloween Costumes

Halloween is just around the corner. Still not sure of what you’ll be dressing up as? Don’t worry! There are a ton of creative, DIY ideas that can turn anything into a winning costume in no time.

The Claus

What you’ll need:

  • A red shirt or dress
  • Santa hat
  • Cotton
  • A black belt

If you have a red shirt or dress, all you need to do is add some cotton around the collar, draw some buttons down the middle and complete the look with a large buckled black belt. Add a fake white beard and a dollar store Santa hat to top it off.

Mother Nature

What you’ll need:

  • A green outfit
  • Fake vines

This one can go in a bunch of different directions. I matched a bralette and midi skirt with dangling earrings, but you can go with a simple green dress, a green t-shirt or even a body suit.

Most dollar or craft stores have a plant section. Grab a string of vines and wrap around your body, legs and arms. Don’t forget the accessories! Bangles, statement necklaces and earrings. It’s Mother Nature – go all out.

Under the sea

What you’ll need:

  • Maxi skirt
  • Netting
  • Bralette
  • Seashells
  • Glitter – lots of glitter

Start off with a fun colored maxi skirt to serve as your tail. Wrap the netting around your waist so it covers as a second layer on top of the skirt. Attach seashells and even fake seaweed or starfish to the netting. Spray with glitter for extra shimmer.

Cover the bralette with two large seashells or starfish too. The shinier, the better, so go all out with the glitter.

Mario Bros.

What you’ll need

  • Overalls
  • Green or red long sleeve shirt
  • White gloves
  • Character hats
  • Fake mustache

Jump into a pair of overalls, throw on the t-shirt and gloves, and don’t forget the thick mustache. Any costume store will carry their hats!

Let’s play ball!

What you’ll need

  • A jersey
  • A headband
  • Eyeblack

Hit the field or the court as your favorite athlete. Grab a jersey, throw on a headband, some leggings or shorts and pair with knee high socks. Don’t forget the eyeblack for football players and hat if you’re going as a baseball player.

Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy

What you’ll need

Mermaid Man:

  • Black shorts
  • Green tights
  • Pink bedroom slippers
  • Orange long sleeve shirt
  • Green dish gloves
  • Two seashells
  • String
  • A wooden or plastic letter M

Barnacle Boy:

  • Red long sleeve shirt
  • Black shorts
  • Blue dish gloves
  • Blue rain boots or blue duct tape
  • Sailor hat
  • Black eye mask
  • Blue bandana

Grab a friend and bring the iconic superhero duo from Spongebob to life.

For Mermaid Man, paint the shells purple, attach them to the orange shirt and use the string to create the seashell bra illusion. Strap the M to your waist and step into the green tights, purple slippers and black shorts.

Barnacle Boy is much simpler than MM if you have blue rain boots. If you don’t, consider getting some inexpensive slippers or flip flops with knee high socks. Wrap the duct tape around your feet and legs (not too tight!) to create the illusion of wearing boots.

Remember, Halloween is about having fun, being creative and playing pretend. Stay safe, stay smart, and let’s see your best costumes!

Until next time…
